Despite the fact an ejaculation contains such a large number of sperm only one passes through the cell membrane of the ovum. Once one sperm has broken through the membrane all other sperm's attempts to enter the ovum are doomed to failure. Having achieved this the nucleus of the successful sperm will fuse with the nucleus of the ovum: this is the moment of fertilisation.
